Doctor Zhivago (2002) DVD Review
A sumptuous retelling of the Russian classic about a man and a nation ripped apart.
One of the greatest love stories ever told - and one of the most courageous artistic acts to emerge from the Russian Revolution - soars in a new adaptation by celebrated screen-writer Andrew Davies (Bridget Jones's Diary, Pride and Prejudice). Using younger actors in the key roles and remaining truer to the novel than David Lean's 1965 feature film, this Doctor Zhivago captures both the sweep of history and the anguish of one good man torn between tender love and irresistible passion. Bend It Like Beckham's Keira Knightley and fellow rising star Hans Matheson (The Mists of Avalon) are incandescent as the doomed lovers, with international film star Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, The Piano) typically brilliant as Lara's manipulative tormentor Komarovsky.
